Parking Structure X Leaf Façade
M.ARCH . DESIGN STUDIO 2 . SPRING 2019 . INSTRUCTOR: YO-ICHIRO HAKOMORI . LOS ANGELES, USA
Inspired by the Spring season in California, this façade project focuses on reflecting the trees and the natural movement of the leaves blown by the wind.
It all started with a square and a diagonal cut from one corner towards the center. Since it is a parking structure, it requires 50% of the space to be open for natural ventilation. With that in mind, the idea was to create levels of cuts and foldings in the metal leaves, in order to not only fulfill the building code, but most importantly develop a unique pattern-free envelope that would break the rigid structure behind it. Various scales of cuts were created in order to provide the impression of wind-blown leaves.
